Reports of product recalls are increasingly making headlines, and with good reason: U.S. recalls reached a four-year high in the first quarter of 2023, spanning everything from eyedrops to frozen fruit to car seats. A recall is one of the biggest challenges that can befall companies in any industry. They often catch leadership by surprise and are nearly always damaging to the business. I’ve helped address a number of recalls over the course of my career, and I can confirm they are not a lot of fun. However, companies can take steps to avoid recalls in the first place and productively address them when they arise.
